The Power of Subliminal Advertising

Friday, November 9th, 2007

Another fantastic YouTube video, this time by mind trickster Derren Brown. Watch and enjoy, this is truly remarkable.

Once you’ve watched the video have a think about what you can do to capture people’s attention without them necessarily realising you are advertising to them.

The Future of Marketing

Thursday, November 8th, 2007

I found this video on YouTube recently and it caught my attention mostly because it’s a presentation by Hugh MacLeod (of Gapingvoid.com fame) about social objects.

Now before watching the video I wasn’t entirely sure what was meant by social objects or that they should be at the centre of your marketing universe. But afterwards it seemed fairly clear that the social element is what makes a lot of the recent Web 2.0 success stories - MySpace, Facebook, Flickr etc etc - so successful.

Anyway, check out the video and remember this quote:

From now on if your marketing doesn’t have any kind of social object within it, you don’t have marketing, you just have junk

10 Steps to Getting Your Website Ready For Xmas

Tuesday, November 6th, 2007

It’s not often I’ll post up here someone else’s 10 Steps list, but this one on preparing your site for Christmas is well worth your attention. If you own an e-commerce site and want to take advantage of the looming festive period you should make sure your site is ready. The list covers everything from spring cleaning to making your site sticky.

You only have to read some of the headlines in the papers to see how much money the analysts expect to be spent online this Christmas. The Times reports that Forrester Research predicts

UK surfers are predicted to spend £13.6 billion in the run-up to Christmas, a 40% rise on last year

If you want to see some reports from last year , head to IT Week. It reports that over £7.5 billion pounds (roughly $15 billion dollars) was spent in the run up to Christmas last year!

Anyway without wanting to steal the ideas of Mario Thomas (from a UK digital agency called Chapter Eight) get yourself over there and read the article.
Get your website ready now, before it’s too late.

Latest poll results

Thursday, November 1st, 2007

Yes, it’s the end of the month and the end of another frantic readers’ poll. I’ll say a huge thank you to all of you who voted, a record turnout as it happens…

Anyway, the question was:

Which blogging platform do you use?

I had a range of 10 answers to choose from, but unsurprisingly only 4 different types were chose, as follows:

WordPress.org (you host your self) 57.1 %

Blogger 14.3%

TypePad 14.3%

WordPress.com (hosted by WordPress)  14.3%

No surprise to see that WordPress comes top of the pile then. It’s certainly the platform I use.

The new poll is now live so please feel free to participate. This month I want to find out which is the best day of the week to publish your posts to generate the most amount of traffic.

Thanks.
