Crowdsourcing - What is It?
I read an incredibly interesting and inspirational book recently about crowdsourcing. Written by Jeff Howe, the Editor of Wired magazine, it is full of case studies of how crowdsourcing is breaking down traditional corporate structures and ways of working, producing innovative ways of developing products, building communities, engaging with customers and more. Essentially new ways of doing business.
If you haven’t heard of crowd sourcing before, it’s time you took a look at it. You can see below a quick intro from Jeff Howe as to what it’s all about, but this is an avenue I am going to be exploring in the near future. Exciting and interesting stuff that’s for sure.

I also going to read this book! I think i will spent my time usefully
I believe many businesses are utilising Crowd Sourcing. I’m still not entirely convinced by the concept, but then perhaps i am just to long in the tooth.
I think that with today’s technology, anything is possible. The target audience can be now reached at far distance lengths and this new theory can utilize that trend as well. This post is quite informative and very helpful.
its really a new theme in business.and mainly the method here using developing product, build up the community and engage them to buy product this is really a superb method.
may b it will take some time but i believe it will give a good result.
When a company makes an attempt to involve its customers in its business, it’s a form of crowdsourcing. But to be successful it needs to be genuine, otherwise the crowd will ultimately see it for what it is, cheap labor.
Really compelling video. A virtual crowd can be incredibly powerful in many ways. Leveraging digital technology essentially makes the world our potential partner. Jeff distilled the essence of his book quite effectively and I will seriously consider investing in his book.
Croudsouring is an excellent method of generating new, innovative ideas within an organization or industry that otherwise seems “locked” in the box. It is also a very effective method for fund raising. A large group of people giving small donations may be a more viable growth strategy for not-for-profits then focusing on a single donor with large pockets. Best of all, geography no longer factors into the equation. The Internet has removed the borders from the talent that can be tapped.
as much as i love the internet, having the chance to share music, pictures,or even thoughts without having to waste any paper is great. but i think as a whole we really use it to much and dont use it to it full potential. thanks 4 the video
Pretty interesting stuff. You can see the potential for leveraging mass collaboration though web technologies.
Thank you for sharing this video.
I think some companies are already doing this a few years ago. It just that maybe that time we still don’t have an appropriate name to call it. Well, I think.
Just finished the crowdsourcing book and loved it. It really made me think about things differently.
It is one of the best article regarding crowdsoucesing. The video represents the true picture about the written contents of book
This is a great way to utilize the innovations available. With the same interests, it is easier to do such tasks. Internet as well as other means of outsourcing served as very well. Thanks for the information.
I think that with today’s technology, anything is possible. Many businesses are utilising Crowd Sourcing. I think the information presented will be useful to many people a lot.
Thank you, I have got some idea on crowdsourcing by watching this video.
It is an interesting video, thank you for sharing. internet had gotten so much of our lives and time, that people over use the use of internet. And we forget or to the extend that we may disregard its useful use.

Crowdsourcing is a neologism for the act of taking tasks traditionally performed by an employee or contractor, and outsourcing them to a group (crowd) of people or community in the form of an open call.
Crowdsourcing is great and i believe it will only grow in popularity. there are websites in the uk where web designers compete to win over clients before they contract work out to them. the concept is great.
The future is bright from what Ive read about it. Good field to get into. thanks….
Crowdsourcing is a neologism for the act of taking tasks traditionally performed by an employee or contractor, and outsourcing them to a group (crowd) of people or community in the form of an open call. For example, the public may be invited to develop a new technology, carry out a design task (also known as community-based design[1] and distributed participatory design), refine or carry out the steps of an algorithm (see Human-based computation), or help capture, systematize or analyze large amounts of data (see also citizen science).
The term has become popular with businesses, authors, and journalists as shorthand for the trend of leveraging the mass collaboration enabled by Web 2.0 technologies to achieve business goals. However, both the term and its underlying business models have attracted controversy and criticisms.
thanks…..

nice video. this video is very useful for SEO point of view
I agree, A large group of people giving small donations may be a more viable growth strategy for not-for-profits then focusing on a single donor with large pockets. Thank you for the informative video
Probably this concept need to be tested as marketing is meaning of testing ways to promote products.
I just hear about crowd sourcing, It can be excellent technique to create innovative business. I should learn it more. Thanks for sharing mate
The name “crowdsourcing” is new to me , but not the concept. I’ve heard of sites that do this exact thing, instead of having employees, when they need something done they address a targeted crowd over the internet. I think this is good because we have no longer barriers, but instead we have a lot of competition!
In flying businesses is a new breakthrough is needed to gain more leverage. Changes need to be done to get the maximum benefit. In this case, innovation in business is required.

My business is one of a large number of online businesses that are making the most of the Crowd Sourcing situation. I wasn’t sure at first, but after giving it a go I could not live without it now.
ive heard of crowd sourcing but never real bothered to learn what it was thanks for the post youve answered a few questions but i shall go and have a closer look at that book.
Thanks!Amidst the financial crisis everywhere, crowdsourcing is one great way to be able to keep your business afloat.Kudos!
The name “crowdsourcing” is also new to me, i think i will try to read it first.
I believe many businesses are utilising Crowd Sourcing. I think the information presented will be useful to many people a lot.
With the use of the web, people can make use of it to easily gather as a means of marketing. This can help in any businesses online. I must admit, a lot of people are utilizing it in order to gain.
I am also going to read that book. that’s really helpful.
I already have an idea about crowdsourcing by watching this video. thanks.
I heard about this twice now. Still I have to be honest for being ignorant about Crowd Sourcing and I think this the right time to consider to take time evaluating on this book.
Nowadays, everything is possible! We can do work online, do business online, communicate online, etc. All tasks can be finished as easy as one, two, three with the help of our technology. Plus the cost benefit result of crow outsourcing can really make the change to every business in any industry.
Great piece. Word-of-mouth is so powerful nowadays. People are given so many different outlets to speak their mind. Getting people behind your product is huge because of the potential marketing they can do for you.

GREAT video. I love how he explains crowdsourcing. Can`t wait to get my hands on the book.
Hello
Thank you very much for sharing this book name about crowd sourcing and its case studies. After reading this post I will definitely read this book because I really want to understand about it.
Crowdsourcing can lead to really great results, in terms of quality, efficiency and cost. One of the most ambitious crowdsourcing projects currently underway is Amazon’s Mechanical Turk. It’s more of a platform than a project, and it works fairly well for outsourcing quick/repetitive but necessary tasks.
thanks! sounds very interessting, i’m going to read more about croud sourcing and maybe buy the book!
great video
Crowd sourcing is now easier due to social media. It is also cheaper and manageable to advertise.
Nowadays, everything is possible! We can do work online, do business online, communicate online, etc. All tasks can be finished as easy as one, two, three with the help of our technology.
Jeff Howe is a really good mentor I think.
Any more videos from him coming? Thanks for the tip… first time I heard something about this guy.
While the principle is sound, “crowd sourcing” sounds like another annoying buzz word to me. Just another term for MBAs to throw around without understanding.
I have seen examples of crowdsourcing with website design where a website brief is put on a website and web designers can put forward website designs and compete for jobs. I think it’s a great way for fresh, innovative talent to emerge. However the downside of this is that people who are new to industries and desperate to get their foot in the door may offer lower prices for their services.
I think this brings us, as humans, back to where we belong: individuals with emotions, desires, wishes - not only consumers. Liberty of choosing what we want and get together with others having the same aspirations.
Your information are well organized. Crowd sourcing is in the process of diminishing now a days. Several necessary measures are needed.
Mass support always needed by the all the corporation who definitely determined their goal.so the crowdsourcing is the basi process for the better position of the company…The important potential of the Author of the book is showed to manage the public source for an organisation.
CrowdSourcing seems to make some damn good sense now that i got a glimpse at that video. However…what about the chinese? Gold farmers in MMORPGs are now stock photographers and basically everything that is digital and can be done through the internet for money. And they do it almost for free.
This is a very great article. This could help us online marketers to increase sales and visitors of our website.
Crowd Sourcing. That’s a new term. Basically it’s just outsourcing but down to the “work at home” types if I’m not mistaken? The Internet has really done wonders. I like how things are going or happening around today. Like you don’t have to pay for the entire album of an artist when you just want one or two of his/her songs. It breaks down tradition, which sometimes is a hindrance to change. Change that I hope is all for the best.
Pretty interesting discussion from Jeff Howe. I like the way the video is presented too. Is there an audiobook available for this?
Great video! It conveyed crowd-sourcing very well. The reality is that through crowd-sourcing, it is very easy for a company to find an innovative product. Why just employ a few and expect them to come up with a genius idea when you can be asking thousands of people for such an idea. It is clear that a company has better odds asking the thousands. Moreover, this method has become so simplified and easy through all the new telecommunication methods!
The concept of crowd-sourcing illustrated in this post sounds very interesting and impressive.I think it will lead a new pathway for improving business and achieving the heights of success. I’m very curious to know more about it.
Having the chance to share music, pictures,or even thoughts without having to waste any paper is great. but i think as a whole we really use it to much and dont use it to it full potential. thanks 4 the video
Got some idea about crowdsourcing from the video. Looking forward to reading the book too soon
I didn’t heard about Crowdsourcing before today. It’s new for me. Thanks for sharing this post and nice video.
This is the first time I have heard about crowdsourcing. I like the concept, I am thinking seriously how it can be used.
I think this topic is fascinating. I hope he explains how to tap into crowdsourcing and predicts a future for this phenomenon. I’ve seen mixed reviews about the book but I’d probably pick it up and browse it.
Crowdsourcing is great and i believe it will only grow in popularity. there are websites in the uk where web designers compete to win over clients before they contract work out to them. the concept is awesome. very recommended book
Hi interesting concept and its something I’m coming across more and more. Be interesting to see if it sticks around or is just another management fad
A large group of people giving small donations may be a more viable growth strategy for not-for-profits then focusing on a single donor with large pockets. Best of all, geography no longer factors into the equation. The Internet has removed the borders from the talent that can be tapped.
Some have predicted that crowdsourcing is the future of the marketing, advertising, and industrial design industries. The phenomenon, they argue, will accelerate creativity across a larger network.
Others, meanwhile, have predicted this practice of opening up a task to the public instead of keeping it in-house or using a contractor will be the demise of those businesses because of the downward pressure on prices. If LG crowdsources a new cell phone design on CrowdSpring for $20,000, as it did recently, what happens to the old model of paying a design firm millions of dollars for the same project?
This form of crowdsourcing delivers productivity that would otherwise not be possible. Also the serendipitous outcomes would never have been reached. What strikes me is the growing community and its traction. By showing early successes more budget and cool data can be used which feeds the passion of the community. It’s an upward spiral! Crowdsourcing proofs to be sustainable at Galaxy Zoo. Organizations could learn a lot about the way the crowd is engaged.
I’m gonna assume crowdsourcing is similar or the same as outsourcing but more of individuals or small groups who are in the same niche with regards to interests, instead of being corporate. With regards to outsourcing, I read in some blog, apparently written by one with Indian descent so it may be biased, that about 60% of the total offshore outsourcing is from India.
It is an interesting video. The term has become popular with businesses, authors, and journalists as shorthand for the trend of leveraging the mass collaboration enabled by Web 2.0 technologies to achieve business goals.
Crowdsourcing” has, virtually overnight, generated huge buzz, enthusiasm, and fear.
This is a really great video and I plan on sharing it with my readers as well.
I think that the main way a small business can benefit from this concept is letting users generate unique content, which in turn, greatly assist in increasing there ranking with Google…
Social media is very much important as plays a very important role in marketing a product.
thanks for sharing the video. I have ordered the book
There is no question that we are rapidly evolving to a place where old societal structures are weakening.
Crowding refers, at bottom, to the burgeoning capability of the world community (the crowd) to provide a service or product efficiently and effectively.
The crowd, with the help of a great search engine, and great creative skills (located somewhere) can do much of what the professional knowledge worker (lawyer, physician, accountant) down the street did just a few decades ago.
Crowding provides opportunities for the individual, business owner and the crowd to help each other out.
As for the professional knowledge worker, he or she will survive by adding creativity and beauty to his/her service or product. And, of course, the knowledge worker is also part of the crowd.
Announce a need, and someone somewhere in the crowd is going to be able to do the work, sometimes for 10% of what the guy down the street would charge to do it.
Daniel Pink in his book, A Whole New Mind, touches upon who will be successful in the 21st century. Crowding fits perfectly into his thesis.
Where a knowledge worker might have had a captured audience in the past, in the future, the captives will be free to choose thanks to the CROWD.
I agree with Jack courtney comments, we are able to do things now that before it would be impossible or it would takes a lot of time to perform. This is the century of globalization and communication we’ll see how it changes our lifes in the short future.
crowdsourcing is being populared by philip kotler
the difference is marketing strategy.
and internet is the greatest tools to crowdsourcing strategy
is there any other resource from where i can download this book, looks pretty useful.
I agree with breaking down the traditional corporate structures and ways of working. There are out there different and better ways of developing products or communites. This is a very recommended book. Best Tomsy
With all the strategies that we can currently use nowadays, getting the idea of other people would be that easy. Moreover, you can surely get different ideas from your outsourced workers that really help your product or company to excel in your chosen field.
wow, never heard of this before. I am now off to scour the internet for all the information i can find.
This reminds me of something from long long ago (in the days of dial-up, I think) where you signed up for some NASA analysis program and your computer downloaded some data and analysed it, then sent it back automatically. There was some incentive, like if your computer discovered a new planet or an alien invasion, then you got credited for it.
Nice stuff. Very informative. If people are looking out for newer ideas, this can help. I totally agree with short sales, with today’ technology anything is possible.
Thank you for sharing this video.
I am sure that the a small business can benefit from this concept. This book is really very useful. Thanks.
Crowed Sourcing book, Nice!
Not that I am very much convinced by the concept of crowd sourcing but now a days a lot of people are utilizing this to their businesses.
Google crowdsources all the time, watching what users click on, and what other web sites link to - google is one giant crowdsource project and they give nothing back to the crowd for our help! LOL 0 well it’s kind of true isn’t it?
Very interesting post on crowdsourcing. Jefe Howe has written a interesting and useful topic, it will help business persons a lot.
The future is bright from what Ive read about it. Good field to get into. thanks….
I think that it’s a great book and I recommend it to anyone who is interesting in innovation.
thanks for the informative article.
But what strikes me is the growing community and its traction. By showing early successes more budget and cool data can be used which feeds the passion of the community.
Just hearing about this, interesting. Working on poll right now to bring attention to my site, thanks for sharing.
power of sharing information world wide with like minded people-I like it!
Nice post. A lot of companies crowd source and while many people make an issue out of it, it’s still the next best thing for international businesses.
Nice post. A lot of companies crowd source and while many people make an issue out of it, it’s still the next best thing for international businesses.
Yea great post - with the world growing the way it is and the amount of people striving to be better it is important that methods such as this be used!
Using the internet to reach out to customers, engage them and develop new and existing ideas is very important, and with the rise of all the web2.0 sites in recent years this will become increasingly easier.
very fascinating topic , just ordered the book , thanks for the great video
Crowd sourcing can be very beneficial for the companies, I would like to appreciate the author for the new concept. Thanks for sharing the informative article.
Crowdsourcing is really catching on in the business world, especially online. It can significantly increase productivity and quality, though it’s not always applicable.
I bought the book, and highly recommend it to anyone who’s into modern marketing as well as traditional… It was a joy to learn.
There’s also a possibility of being let down especially if it’s a difficult task. I think, if ever, I would only give them tasks where you just can’t go wrong.
Really nice post. Crowdsourcing is a new idea in business. Really useful seo point of view.
A virtual crowd can be incredibly powerful in many ways. I have ordered the book.Let’s see what is this about?New business methods?
Crowdsourcing sounds very interesting. I would love to read this book now to get a better understanding. I think this could definitely be a useful tool in business going further.
The crowd has led me to making a decision to get this book. LOL thanks for the heads up
“Crowd sourcing” seems to be just another feather into the web 2.0 world of open communication, knowledge sharing and media news explosion.Seems to be having unparalleled options for a creative marketer for his services.
I have heard of crowd sourcing before but I really don’t have an idea what it is all about until I’ve seen the video you posted. Jeff Howe seems to be a very good writer. I will certainly read his book about crowd sourcing.
I had never heard of crowd sourcing before, but your video was very informative and helped me understand the concept. Thanks.
Well explained on the concept of crowd sourcing. It just made me realize how the world and the Internet has evolved into so many things and this is one of it. It’s creating so much opportunities.
Crowdsourcing is a neologism for the act of taking tasks conventionally presented by a worker or contractor, and outsourcing them to a group of people or community, through an “open call” to a large group of people (a crowd) inquiring for contributions.
It’s certainly going to be an interesting decade ahead of us with new paradigms like this.
hi it is a nice article on crowd sourcing. It is good to read it. I did not know much about crowd sourcing before reading your article. It is good to use this technique in business. Thanks for information and keep uploading .
Thank you, I have got some idea on crowdsourcing by watching this video.
Sounds like an interesting type of work strategy. I think a lot of businesses are already using this. I’ll look if I can find an e-book about it. I’m very interested.
It’s wonderful how you can still get things done even though it’s de-centralized in a way. I mean you got people from all over the world who can do a task for you just as good as you would if you were to hire people in your company and sit it out all day doing that task. Plus I think crowdsourcing is cheaper.
Pretty interesting stuff. You can see the potential for leveraging mass collaboration though web technologies.
Regards,
Mohamed.
crowdsourcing is something new to me, but What I dont like at the moment about all this social networking is that its a bit to much, because when people meet in real life they dont know what to say to each other.
Well in some cases this crowd sourcing can be very useful if you know how to use it. It can help to get more customers if you know how.
Great video

thanks for this.. great opener to me about crowdsourcing. thanks again
I heard some time ago about this book and most interesting part for me was his explanation social bookmarking . I bought it fewdays ago, and for me this was perfect investment.
Great tip! Its very very interesting when you learn about that you can choose your audience. It will be usefull for future SEO and of course now!
Awesome video and very inspiring. Thanks for sharing!
