Crowdsourcing - What is It?

I read an incredibly interesting and inspirational book recently about crowdsourcing. Written by Jeff Howe, the Editor of Wired magazine, it is full of case studies of how crowdsourcing is breaking down traditional corporate structures and ways of working, producing innovative ways of developing products, building communities, engaging with customers and more. Essentially new ways of doing business.

If you haven’t heard of crowd sourcing before, it’s time you took a look at it. You can see below a quick intro from Jeff Howe as to what it’s all about, but this is an avenue I am going to be exploring in the near future. Exciting and interesting stuff that’s for sure.

When a company makes an attempt to involve its customers in its business, it’s a form of crowdsourcing. But to be successful it needs to be genuine, otherwise the crowd will ultimately see it for what it is, cheap labor.

Really compelling video. A virtual crowd can be incredibly powerful in many ways. Leveraging digital technology essentially makes the world our potential partner. Jeff distilled the essence of his book quite effectively and I will seriously consider investing in his book.

Croudsouring is an excellent method of generating new, innovative ideas within an organization or industry that otherwise seems “locked” in the box. It is also a very effective method for fund raising. A large group of people giving small donations may be a more viable growth strategy for not-for-profits then focusing on a single donor with large pockets. Best of all, geography no longer factors into the equation. The Internet has removed the borders from the talent that can be tapped.

Crowdsourcing is a neologism for the act of taking tasks traditionally performed by an employee or contractor, and outsourcing them to a group (crowd) of people or community in the form of an open call. For example, the public may be invited to develop a new technology, carry out a design task (also known as community-based design[1] and distributed participatory design), refine or carry out the steps of an algorithm (see Human-based computation), or help capture, systematize or analyze large amounts of data (see also citizen science).

The term has become popular with businesses, authors, and journalists as shorthand for the trend of leveraging the mass collaboration enabled by Web 2.0 technologies to achieve business goals. However, both the term and its underlying business models have attracted controversy and criticisms.
    thanks…..

The name “crowdsourcing” is new to me , but not the concept. I’ve heard of sites that do this exact thing, instead of having employees, when they need something done they address a targeted crowd over the internet. I think this is good because we have no longer barriers, but instead we have a lot of competition!

Crowdsourcing can lead to really great results, in terms of quality, efficiency and cost. One of the most ambitious crowdsourcing projects currently underway is Amazon’s Mechanical Turk. It’s more of a platform than a project, and it works fairly well for outsourcing quick/repetitive but necessary tasks.

While the principle is sound, “crowd sourcing” sounds like another annoying buzz word to me. Just another term for MBAs to throw around without understanding.

  50. Paul on December 4th, 2009

I have seen examples of crowdsourcing with website design where a website brief is put on a website and web designers can put forward website designs and compete for jobs. I think it’s a great way for fresh, innovative talent to emerge. However the downside of this is that people who are new to industries and desperate to get their foot in the door may offer lower prices for their services.

  56. Lån on December 8th, 2009

Crowd Sourcing. That’s a new term. Basically it’s just outsourcing but down to the “work at home” types if I’m not mistaken? The Internet has really done wonders. I like how things are going or happening around today. Like you don’t have to pay for the entire album of an artist when you just want one or two of his/her songs. It breaks down tradition, which sometimes is a hindrance to change. Change that I hope is all for the best.

Pretty interesting discussion from Jeff Howe. I like the way the video is presented too. Is there an audiobook available for this?

  57. Intelligence on December 9th, 2009

Great video! It conveyed crowd-sourcing very well. The reality is that through crowd-sourcing, it is very easy for a company to find an innovative product. Why just employ a few and expect them to come up with a genius idea when you can be asking thousands of people for such an idea. It is clear that a company has better odds asking the thousands. Moreover, this method has become so simplified and easy through all the new telecommunication methods!

Some have predicted that crowdsourcing is the future of the marketing, advertising, and industrial design industries. The phenomenon, they argue, will accelerate creativity across a larger network.

Others, meanwhile, have predicted this practice of opening up a task to the public instead of keeping it in-house or using a contractor will be the demise of those businesses because of the downward pressure on prices. If LG crowdsources a new cell phone design on CrowdSpring for $20,000, as it did recently, what happens to the old model of paying a design firm millions of dollars for the same project?

This form of crowdsourcing delivers productivity that would otherwise not be possible. Also the serendipitous outcomes would never have been reached. What strikes me is the growing community and its traction. By showing early successes more budget and cool data can be used which feeds the passion of the community. It’s an upward spiral! Crowdsourcing proofs to be sustainable at Galaxy Zoo. Organizations could learn a lot about the way the crowd is engaged.

  68. Billigt Webbhotell on December 19th, 2009

I’m gonna assume crowdsourcing is similar or the same as outsourcing but more of individuals or small groups who are in the same niche with regards to interests, instead of being corporate. With regards to outsourcing, I read in some blog, apparently written by one with Indian descent so it may be biased, that about 60% of the total offshore outsourcing is from India.

There is no question that we are rapidly evolving to a place where old societal structures are weakening.

Crowding refers, at bottom, to the burgeoning capability of the world community (the crowd) to provide a service or product efficiently and effectively.

The crowd, with the help of a great search engine, and great creative skills (located somewhere) can do much of what the professional knowledge worker (lawyer, physician, accountant) down the street did just a few decades ago.

Crowding provides opportunities for the individual, business owner and the crowd to help each other out.

As for the professional knowledge worker, he or she will survive by adding creativity and beauty to his/her service or product. And, of course, the knowledge worker is also part of the crowd.

Announce a need, and someone somewhere in the crowd is going to be able to do the work, sometimes for 10% of what the guy down the street would charge to do it.

Daniel Pink in his book, A Whole New Mind, touches upon who will be successful in the 21st century. Crowding fits perfectly into his thesis.

Where a knowledge worker might have had a captured audience in the past, in the future, the captives will be free to choose thanks to the CROWD.

Sounds like an interesting type of work strategy. I think a lot of businesses are already using this. I’ll look if I can find an e-book about it. I’m very interested.

It’s wonderful how you can still get things done even though it’s de-centralized in a way. I mean you got people from all over the world who can do a task for you just as good as you would if you were to hire people in your company and sit it out all day doing that task. Plus I think crowdsourcing is cheaper.

Why just employ a few and expect them to come up with a genius idea when you can be asking thousands of people for such an idea. It is clear that a company has better odds asking the thousands. Moreover, this method has become so simplified and easy through all the new telecommunication command
