Measuring your Social Media Campaigns
Ever wondered how you can measure the impact of you social media campaigns? Well, all of the answers you could possibly need are here at the home of Measurementcamp.
What’s Measurement Camp?
It’s a London based initiative from PR agency Fishburn Hedges with the aim to “create a set of open source resources which allow interested parties to measure their social media communications online and offline.”
Not only will you find a host of fantastic online tools, but some case studies, ideas for benchmarking and links to other resources on social measurement such as the Facebook group.
If you are interested in learning more about actually getting your messaging into the social mediasphere in the first place and in the right way, then you might like to check out a seminar being run by the Chartered Institute of Public Relations Marketing Communications Group called ‘PR 2.0, is your communication online, on-message?’
If you want to attend it’s being held in Central London between 6pm – 9pm on the 26th November and tickets range from £10+ VAT for students, up to £45 plus VAT for non-members of the CIPR. If you would like to attend drop me a line via comments or the contact form and I’ll send your details into the CIPR – or you can contact the CIPR online.
Speakers on the night will include Kevin Murray, Chairman of Bell Pottinger PR, Matthew McKay of BioMed Central and Edward Roussel, Telegraph Media Group Digital Editor.
And I musn’t forget there is the promise of mince pies and mulled wine – yes, Christmas is indeed nearly upon us.

MeasurementCamp - collaborating to make sense of measuring social media. The purpose of this initiative is to create a set of open source resources which allow interested parties to measure their social media communications online and offline.
I really don’t use social media marketing before but when it gave my site a boost on rankings and traffic, I started to seek them all so I can market there and use them to my advantage.
That’s an interesting initiative. The lack of measurement is perhaps the main reason my so many large companies neglect social media marketing - this initiative could change that.
I agree with Marketing Minefield, this is the type of service that can propel a lot more interest in social media across the board.
i also wasn’t a fan of social networking sites but then realized its a true power when it comes marketing or bringing traffic to your websites.
There have been raging debate on how effective social media is in boosting profit and in branding awareness. Every business should try using social media campaign, which is a true departure from the traditional marketing campaign. The world has changed. Today’s digital era will further highlight the importance of social media.
Social Media Marketing is a great, cost effective way to market your business — and with so many sprouting social media and web 2.0 inventions it is not a worthless enterprise. The number one question that comes up in social media marketing is how it can be measured — and I think this program is just what social media marketers and their devotees need. Thanks for the information.

That is a pretty interesting idea to actually measure how good your social media campaigns are doing. I wonder how they will incorporate the offline and online managing. That will be interesting to see.
And yes, most definitely, Christmas is almost upon us…and I still need to do my shopping!
Thanks for all the great comments. It seems to me the more I engage with social media marketing, the more I realise that there are huge opportunities, but also lots of potential pitfalls. We need to be careful about the choice of social media for each business and define a careful set of measurement criteria to evaluate success.
I certainly agree with Wholesale Sunglasses in that every business should attempt to use Web 2.0 to market their business. Even it it is just to try out a Twitter / PLurk feed, or post videos on Flickr, or a simple blog, as long as the aim is well thought through, it itsn’t too hard to take a few tentative steps.
Almir Bojkovic - I would say social networking sites can add a lot of value, but again, think through your strategy before jumping in. Mistakes on the web can last a long time. Facebook is good, but is it the right forum for reaching your audience for example.
MonaVie - yep, Christmas is nearly here. Just 30 odd more hard working days and then it’s holiday time. Kick back, relax and enjoy!
Hi there, I’ve been looking for a site like yours since last Saturday. The last place I searched (should be the first) was in Google, using the keywords “Online Marketing Agency”. Anyway, it was worth the search because I really like this website and your post regarding ring your Social Media Campaigns : Marketing Blagger looks very interesting for me. Definitely Stumbled!

Thousands of blog contain posts related how to measure the effectiveness of a social media campaign , many of which throw up a mathematical formula which give even Einstein a pause to think.
I have come across PR 2.0 before as well.Online social media campaign info offered here is good.
Hi all
A bit belatedly, but I thought I should volunteer that although Fishburn Hedges hosted September’s Measurement Camp, the idea was Will Mcinnes’ (
of Nixon Mcinnes fame). It sprung out of a session he did with other social media peeps at a Chinwag do on measurement a while back. I’m very involved (partly with my Fishburn Hedges hat on, partly because I’m just into it) but credit where it’s due.
The wiki is now open for the December one. 17th I think, Central London… do come along/share thinking if you’d like.
Chris

Any feedback from the event? Would be really interested to hear.
PR firms have always had difficulty measuring the effectiveness of campaigns. Hopefully the more direct nature of web based initiatives can make them a bit more measurable online.

Good post.
All of this withstanding the biggest problem I’m having these days is to get my clients to understand the important of social media in terms of brand building. They still think it’s some kind of novelty that teens are into. I’ve been trying to get people to understand that social media sites are having a huge influence not only in the conversations people are having about a brand, but also on the search results that are coming up.
I recently wrote a post about the tools that people are using to monitor the online space and that clients are still hung up in web analaytics to judge their brands health in the online space, but I’d like to hear your thoughts on it. E-mail me some time!
