Irritating Marketing
I read a piece from the Direct Marketing International journal recently that summarised a survey from Pitney Bowes about the forms of marketing found most irritating by consumers. You probably won’t be too surprised to hear that automated telesales won the top prize. I’m sure everyone agrees with me in that the second you hear that automated voice on the phone the only course of action is to hang up.
However there must be some people who respond to automated calls, otherwise marketers wouldn’t be putting money into these campaigns. As such, please, if you have spent money on an automated telesales campaign and it’s generated results for you, get in touch. I’d be delighted to hear your views on the subject and to tell everyone about your success story!
The survey also found that live telesales and spam emails were the second and third most irritating forms of marketing. There seems to be a pattern here with direct marketing receiving a bit of a bashing in the survey. However David Jefferies from Pitney Bowes seems to think that direct marketing is a good tactic, but that companies need to talk to their customers properly:
The message here is clear: spend time and effort on data collection and analysis, and build sophisticated customer profiles
In other words, if you are going to use direct marketing tactics, make sure you target the correct people with the correct message. Or, don’t use a shotgun approach, but a sniper rifle with your communications. This makes sense when you think about it, especially as consumer groups become more segmented by niche needs and wants. Better to run several campaigns with highly targeted messaging, than one campaign trying to reach out to too many people at once.
A little bit of research on Pitney Bowes seems to show they run regular surveys, so keep your eyes peeled on them for more interesting marketing insights!
22/9 Update
I have to share the comment from Daniel Penton who linked to the following hilarious YouTube clip. Anyone who hates telesales will love this (sorry if it causes offence to anyone)..

irritating markets are those that come from the telephones.. :/

I am reading a book that is about social media marketing. It points out that the younger generation in their 20/early 30’s are not going to respond to direct marketing and find it extremely annoying. Rather, they want to be engaged in a social media context where they have a say in what a company’s products are based on their needs. I believe older people are used to direct marketing and therefore will still respond to it.
I have to vote for spam email and ANY phone contact as the top 2, especially since they are now starting to call prepaid cell phones which is an additional irritation due to the cost of minutes. Interesting post, thanks!

I also wonder if people respond to automated calls or what the success rate are. I personally never answer my home phone anymore cause I get so many automated calls a month asking for donations or something. I just end up using my cell phone for any of my calls.
The thing is that automated calls are much much cheaper then hiring someone answering the phone all day. But i’m sure with whatever product you are selling that if you don’t have automated phone, then you will sell much more products.
Seems hard to believe that anyone would respond to automated telemarketer calls. But as you said, someone must, otherwise companies wouldn’t be wasting their time and money doing it.

I think automated telesales is most irritating marketing .
i am agree with your every opinion given in the post.thanks for the idea of research on Pitney Bowes.i think your information gonna help us.thanks for the post.
I agree with you. The insights you have so provided here helps and I have enjoyed this post. More power Andy!
I no longer answer my phone, either, and we are even thinking of switching only to cells. Automated calls may be cheaper, but if no one is answering them, there’s still no point. I’d love to know their success rate.
You are absolutely correct - the shotgun approach is what kills most direct marketing campaign results. It seems that many people use it, but it backfires. I worked in telemarketing for almost 5 years, 4 of those years in management positions. I can tell you that it works, but your list demographics have to be spot on.
My personal worst irritating marketing is the canned recordings as well. Look, if there is a 2 second delay … forget it. I’m out.
I agree all with you. Marketing for marketer must be a pleasure not must.
It is also irritating to receive the same offers from different telemarketers who use the same phone books as the telemarketers before them.
These automated telemarketer calls are driving me crazy sometimes. What a way to make a living…
I can only agree with the top 3. When I see 800 numbers on my caller ID, I don’t even pick up the phone anymore.
If I need a product or service I’m not going to wait until some company calls with an offer.

Good post Andy. In terms of annoying marketing, i’m sure the personal telemarketing call would be up there too. Maybe we should all start doing this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iNDvmA-abh0
When the marketing things become like this I really hate the matter. don’t you feel the same?
i do find telemarketing annoying, but i try to be nice to the person on the other end. but you have a point, it must in some ways work, or i’d assume that the practice would have died out a long time ago.
I am in the same boat… I hate automated telemarketers!! I think they’re unsuccessful because there’s something in all of us that doesn’t feel so bad when we hang up on a machine, instead of an actual person. We are humans, we all crave that personal touch. When we don’t get it, why bother?
irritating marketing are from the phones& pop ups when we are surfing in the net .they are just irritating.
As far as i suggest Your Web site acts a great role in providing information to targeted visitors. I recognize or rated it as excellent.
I hate automated telesales, live telesales and spam emails because they treat me like an object, not like a human. On the other hand I think that they make some money if agree to use such irritating methods.
Yes, by telephone. Just think that when you are working on some very important project, you client is waiting with stick in hand and you got marketing call, how irritating it can be? I just hate them.
But yeah once upon a time i was working in the same irritating field.
I agree with you - the shotgun approach is what kills most direct marketing campaign results.
By the way, my comapny have already did the Orkut spam and I can tell you that the result is good, but the percentage of regress is undermost.
Thanks for the hints!
Rachel

I have to agree that automated sales calls are the most annoying. Especially since they all ask you to hold on at first and then you get the pitch. By that point I have hung up. Telesales, while annoying, if done properly, can be very successful. And, believe it or not, spam works, so long as you don’t bombard the propects with a plethora of emails…cause that will actually hinder all your efforts. I would like to know how successful automated sales are too. One thing’s for sure, i doubt anyone who ever used automated sales was convinced to do so by an an automated machine…
Automated voicemails are also pretty bad. It is frustrating when the automated messages are cut off, so that you could not even return the call if you wanted.

I really enjoyed this article, and the attached video was a great addition. I think I’m going to add it to my YouTube favorites. =)
The problem is that phone marketing really works.. Some people just buy at the telephone
I agree that automated sales calls are annoying. I think it’s due to how invasive they are. If I am at home enjoying some time with my family I don’t want to be cold called.
It’s bad enough in the office.
thanks great read, Also your site looks excellent, ive tried my hand at design but without luck.

Telesales marketing really gets under people’s skin especially as telemarketers have the annoying habit of ringing during one’s dinner time… alas it will continue because telesales works, period.

Tuesday In searching for sites related to AdSense but more specifically to %KEYWORD, I found your site which has great content.
But seriously though…who DOESN’T hang up the minute they hear the automated voice. I’m still waiting on someone to answer you back with a success story. Tried to watch the video but sadly, it’s no longer available - what should I be searching for you YT?
For me the worse is email marketing.. lots of unnecessary mails not only in my spam box but also in my inbox, I just don’t know how this kind of marketing ever created and later on developed.
I think it’s clear for everyone: you need to make the message more personal, no matter what you’re selling
Aggresive marketing is irritating..
